What is bilberry?

Bilberry is often called European blueberry. It is because bilberry
grows abundantly in the mountainous areas of Europe. Bilberry is
closely related to American Blueberry. It has a  creamy white meat.

What is its potential health benefits?

Bilberry possesses of various potential health benefits. Moderate
consumption of bilberry extract may have the benefits of lowering the
risk of cardiovascular disease or improving  visual functions. In
addition, bilberry fruits contain tannins. It may help treat diarrhea, sore
throat, and mouth inflammations. Bilberry also contains a lot of
anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are antioxidants. They protect cells from
damage caused by free radicals and thus, it allows the anticancer
activities of bilberry extracts in cell studies.

However, it has a lot of adverse side effects including mild digestive
distress, skin rashes and drowsiness. It may also interact with
anti-platelet agents, NSAIDS, particularly aspirin. High doses of
bilberry leaf is poisonous.
