Resveratrol Information
Resveratrol Information
Resveratrol, 3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene, a polyphenol, may have varous health
benefits. This article summarizes key information, such as source,
potential health benefits, side effects, toxicity, dosage forms, dose, studies
about resveratrol.
Resveratrol Source / Resveratrol Wine
The major sources of resveratrol are red wine and grapes. However, one
liter of red wine contains only 1.5-3 mg of resveratrol, while some animal
studies suggest intake of 500 mg of resveratrol for its therapeutic effects
on certain conditions. [1,8]
Resveratrol Study / Health Benefits of Reveratrol
In vitro or animal studies, resveratrol exhibits a wide range of biological
effects, such as antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimutagenica
and antifungal activities. [1]
Resveratrol Antioxidant
Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant and it is believed to have health benefits
on various conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. [1]
Resveratrol Cancer
Researchers found that resveratrol inhibits cancer initiation and promotion.
[2,3] In a study, resveratrol causes suppression of DNA synthesis,
activation of nitric oxide synthase in gastric adenocarcinoma cells. [6]
Resveratrol Arthritis
It is believed resveratol may benefit people suffered from arthritis.
Resveratrol Diabetes / Cardiovascular Diseases
Resveratrol may protect and maintain the intact endothelium, exhibits
antiatherosclerotic properties, inhibits the LDL oxidation, suppress the
platelet aggregation and exhibits estrogen like action. [4,7]
Resveratrol Weight
Not sure. If resveratrol has benefits on weight management.
Resveratrol Cream / Resveratrol Skin Cream
Studies show topical applied resveratrol inhibits HSV lesion formation in
the skin of mice. [A]
Resveratrol Dosage / Resveratrol Pill / Resveratrol Cap
Resveratrol is supplemented in pills and capsules. Surfactant is added in
some products to improve the release rate of resveratrol. Resveratrol is
water-insoluble.
Reveratrol Side Effects / Resveratrol Dose
Resveratrol is a metal chelator; it may prevent copper absorption and lead
to copper deficiency. Animal study shows that high dose of resveratrol is
toxic. Though daily dose of 500 mg resveratrol (without surfactant, such as
Tween 80) is promoted, I am not sure if it is safe.
